Better known as "The Central Hotel" it is a wonderful, if slightly faded, example of Victorian Railway oppulence. Bags of character, massive and an unrivalled position in the heart of this thriving city.

Nice, clean hotel. Breakfast spread is very good if you like English breakfast. Only problem is that the lifts are old and move very slowly. Gym equipment is new and good range of equipment. Never tried the swimming pool so can't comment. Cost from airport to hotel is about 20 pounds. There is a bus serving the airport and the city center. The hotel is in the city center - about 30 mins walk from the SECC. There is a safe at the reception counter where you can keep your important documents. Good place to stay and unwind.

Generous sized clean rooms. Excellent location, especially if travelling outside Glasgow as the hotel is sited on the Central Station. Excellent breakfast. Staff were extremely helpful. Taxi rank outside and plenty of late night eateries nearby. In the middle of renovations which meant that that there was scaffolding outside some of the rooms. Some of the windows had be painted whilst closed and therefore unable to open.

The room we had smelt of stale smoke and you could smell the smoke from other people smoking and this was a no smoking room. The towel heater in bathroom didn't work and there was mould around bath... Also the remote for the tv was missing

Non smoking room was on 5th floor up elevator and then stairs. No trolley for bags or help with baggage. It is OVER the train station. Heat was controlled by opening window. No airport shuttle. TV was 13 inch with limited channels. Very noisy corridors and walls. Staff was always "sorry" about the fact only 1 elevate ran at a time. We were offered a "better" smoking room but we needed a non smoking one. Not very mobility limited friendly.

We booked a family room for the night over the internet. On arrival, we were met by reception staff who admitted he didn't know what he was doing, and tried to charge us 4 times the amount of our confirmation price. He also asked us for a £25 security that would not be charged to my account. I then checked out the next day and realized I had been charged this fee. I inquired twice to the hotel to no avail, and then had to write to head office of Quality Hotels, which I am still waiting for a solution, and refund!

As to the hotel, the corridor was very shabby with external wiring, the room was very old fashioned, broken furniture, there was a layer of dust above the headboards, and bedside cabinets, the tv had limited channels and only two channels were visible due to inaccurate tuning, the safety lock mechanism on the window was broken, there was no heating, the air conditioning unit didn't work, we were given two towels for 4 people, the bathroom had a sign saying, "water unsuitable for drinking" which meant we couldn't use the tea/coffee facilities, the bathroom had mold all over, the water was yellow, the floor tiles were broken, the bars and leisure centre were closed, only one elevator worked, the restaurant only served food at breakfast and from 6:30 til 9:00 in the evening with a very limited menu. The only good point this hotel has is its location. Badly needs refurbished to take it back to its deserved grand state!

We had read grand descriptions of the hotel, boasting all its supposed amenities and room facilities and design. On arrival, we were met by reception staff who admitted to "not knowing what he was doin",and he tried to charge over 4 times the rate at which was confirmed during online booking. He asked another member of staff to help, and this was supposedly resolved. He then stated that we would have to leave our debit card details for a £25 security hold but this would not be charged. After awaiting 10 mins on the elevator, due to the other 2 being broken, we finally arrived to our room, struggling with our luggage. We were met by an old fashioned, run down bedroom which had torn wallpaper, broken shabby furniture, grotty old bedding which consisted of one blanket each with a cotton sheet, a thick layer of dust on the units and headboards, and not forgetting a disgusting spore riddled bathroom. The bathroom was full of mold, broken floor tiles, dirt ingrained wall tiles and a notice stating that "water was unsuitable for drinking". This is something you would expect in a third world country, not in Glasgow! We clearly believed that the water was a hazard when we decided to take a bath and found that the water was yellow! The window security lock was broken, allowing for full opening of the window, how this passed health and safety issues I do not know! Especially when we had a 9 year old child with us, who quite easily could have reached the window sill, while 4 floors up! There was no heating, even although when we telephoned down to reception, were advised to use the unit in the room, which was in fact an air conditioning unit which was broken. We decided to explore the hotel, and found that the supposed grand bars were closed, and that the restaurant only served a limited menu from 6:30 pm until 9pm. Therefore there was nowhere to eat or drink, despite them having a notice on the door stating,"only food and drink purchased in this hotel may be consumed". Were we supposed to starve? We also found that the "newly refurbished leisure centre and swimming pool" were in fact "Closed for refurbishment". After a restless, disappointing night, we were glad to be leaving and checking out. Although, our disappointment didn't end there. On visiting the bank,I found that I had been charged the £25 to my account. I telephoned the hotel to be told that I hadn't. I explained that I had written proof in a bank statement, and this was when she said I would be refunded within the hour. Which 3 hours later I wasn't. So I telephoned the hotel again to be told that I would have to wait 3 days? 3 days for an electronic debit to my account which any other time is instant, and of which I should not have been charged for in the first place! She then said that she would deal with it right away and telephone me back, and yes..she didn't! It is now a full day later, and I still haven't been refunded my £25, nor have I received my telephone call! I being Scottish,am disgusted that people from all over the world are visiting the first and nearest hotel ajoining the largest train station in Glasgow, only to be met by this hotel! Having stayed at various hotels within Glasgow and the surrounding area, and experienced an amazing, high standard, feel that this hotel gives tourists and visitors to our country the completely wrong impression of what is available! This hotel should be reported to Trading Standards and the Environmental Health Board!

The fact that this hotel is so central means that we would definitely consider staying here again. As we stepped off the train, we could see the name of the hotel - perfect for a mixed-age group, when the elder family member was keen to rest and the youngest wanted to explore the leisure centre, followed by the shops! Admittedly, there are areas which are still in need of renovation but the rooms we had were spacious and clean. The breakfast was fine, the staff pleasant. Overall, for a city centre hotel, it was good value.

I was generally very pleased with the standard of the hotel. I found the staff to be more than helpful especially the porter. The night before leaving for the hotel i read the reviews and was hesitant about my stay but am gald that i took no heed to them for the hotel was fab. Steeped in history and architecturaly attractive. If I have a gripe it would be the standard of the bathroom which was a little grubby and tired and the shower was not hot. But i had a most pleasent time at the hotel.
